HAN DING, PIANO & VIDEOGRAPHY

Han is a musician and artist whose work has covered an extensive range of creative disciplines. A classical pianist of over twenty years, he has performed as a soloist and ensemble player, composed new works and arrangements, and taught piano for seventeen years. He has also worked in visual and media arts.

In 2018 Han appeared as a soloist with the Symphony of the Kootenays, performing Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto. He participated in the national CMC Stepping Stone competition, the CMC Finals on piano and harpsichord, and the RBC Concerto Competition with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. His repertoire includes major works from all eras, from Bach's Goldberg Variations to Prokofiev's Sonata No. 6. Han also maintains an active recording schedule; his recent recordings have included Childhood Memories (1996) by composer D. Geoffrey Bell and Tchaikovsky's The Seasons.

For Canada's 150th, Han was one of eight Alberta composers commissioned by ARMTA to write piano pieces based on folk songs, with the works published by Palliser. His output includes piano works, chamber pieces for cello, bassoon, and oboe, and numerous classical and jazz piano arrangements.

As a visual artist, Han has focused on painting and crafts. He has also worked on numerous media projects, including promotional videography, wedding photography, and narrative filmmaking. He is currently constructing an architecturally accurate scale model of the Anne Frank House.

Han studied piano with Peter Thomas Turner and Vladimir Levtov, and composition with Allan Gordon Bell. He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Music in piano performance and a Bachelor of Arts in English, and received Licentiate and Associate piano diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music. He is currently a piano instructor at MRU Conservatory. In his free time Han enjoys watching movies, travelling, driving, and writing fiction. He has lived in Calgary since 1993.
